Hike in MLAs' allowances

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JUNE 25. The Kerala Cabinet today approved a proposal seeking to hike various allowances given to legislators in view of the all-round increase in costs.

The vehicle allowance for MLAs has been hiked from Rs. 2.50 per km to Rs. 4 per km, while the constituency allowance has been increased from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 3,500. There would also be a marginal increase in their telephone allowance, according to sources.

The current hike has been effected in the backdrop of increase in diesel price and in view of the fact that the existing rates were fixed more than six years ago. According to sources, the rates are much lower than what existed in States such as Goa and Delhi and the Union Territory of Pondicherry.
