The high-level Joint Parliamentary Committee on security set up in the wake of the terrorist attack in December 2001 met today under the chairmanship of the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker, P.M. Sayeed, to review the implementation of security measures. Officials associated with the committee told The Hindu that the proposals reviewed included the suggestion to close down the Talkatora road running between the Parliament House and the Parliament annexe. The committee is reported to be favourably inclined to the suggestion. Plans are currently under way to broaden the Imtiaz Khan road running parallel to the annexe to take care of the traffic dislocation as a result of the closing down of the Talkatora road. A senior Lok Sabha MP, also a JPC member, said that the committee had received a number of suggestions but "the implementation was being done based on the assessment of the security experts". The committee has also availed of the expertise and suggestions of the security agencies. These agencies are reported to have spent a considerable amount of time studying the Parliament complex before assessing the threat perception. According to a member the security measures that are being put in place have been devised to take care of all exigencies. "We will eventually have measures in place that will make the complex as secure as it can possibly be," says a JPC member.
