Cauvery technical committee defers decision

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI June 25. The first meeting of the Cauvery technical committee on Tuesday asked Karnataka to give its response on the Cauvery distress sharing formula evolved by the Central Water Commission (CWC) within two weeks. At the meeting, officials of Karnataka declined to accept the CWC formula in the present form and sought several amendments in it. It was insisted on behalf of Karnataka that several parameters like inflows into the reservoirs, rainfall in the catchment areas between Karnataka reservoirs and Mettur should be taken into consideration while evolving the formula.

However, on behalf of the Union Water Resources Ministry it was pointed out that the CWC formula was evolved in the interest of the riparian States and all should accept it. On behalf of Tamil Nadu, it was submitted that any delay in evolving the distress formula would spoil the harvest in the State this year.

But Karnataka insisted that their response could be given only after consulting the State, and hence, two weeks time was given to them to give their suggestions to the CWC formula.

The meeting was attended by technical experts from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry and senior officials from the Water Resources Ministry.
