Corpn. to get tough with cattle owners

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI JUNE 27. The Chennai Corporation on Friday said it would get tough with cattle owners who did not move their herds out of `prohibited' zones before July 31, and threatened to invoke a clause of Tamil Nadu Animals and Birds in Urban Areas (Control and Regulation) Act, 1997, making the offence punishable with a sentence of up to three years imprisonment and levy of fine to the tune of Rs 5,000.

The Act banned rearing of cattle in the city apart from wards 1, 2, 62, 63, 64, 65, 128, 129, 153, 154 and 155.

According to the civic agency, show cause notices have already been served on 1,051 cattle owners.

Meanwhile, sources said efforts were on to enforce a total prohibition on cattle in the city by including the 11 wards that were currently exempted from the Act so that the city would be free of cattle.
