Talks to resolve river water row

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 27. The Central Water Commission today held a meeting of officials of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in a bid to resolve the differences between the two States over river water projects. Representatives of both States put up their case before the Commission on the objections raised by Andhra Pradesh over Paragodu and Upper Tunga projects.

Meanwhile, Mr. Naidu has written a letter to the Union Water Resources Minister, Arjun Charan Sethi, urging him to instruct Karnataka to stop the Paragodu project. He argued that the project was meant not solely for drinking water, its hydraulic particulars were not changed in any parameter and that it violated the 1982 and 1933 agreements.

He said that while the CWC could always discuss the Andhra Pradesh projects, it could not take a decision since Karnataka was ``merely raising a complaint in order to confuse the issue and divert the attention from CWC the legitimate issues raised by the Government of Andhra Pradesh''
