The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, distributing sweets to soldiers during a visit to Uri in Kashmir on Saturday.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of soldiers in the forward area of Uri near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir today, Dr. Kalam congratulated the Army for the good job done by them in the State. "I congratulate you for your good job near the LoC, especially (what for you have done) for the public... you are the defenders of the Valley." Dr. Kalam was accompanied by the Commander of 15 Corps, Lt. Gen. V. G. Patankar. The closest Pakistani picket was 7 km from where Dr. Kalam addressed the troops. Speaking in English, he said "tomorrow's world will be a difficult one but India will be a focal point and we will win''. The world was faced with challenges in the form of religious, ideological and economic conflicts. "We have to handle these conflicts." Prays at Hazratbal The President began his hectic schedule here with a visit to the Hazratbal shrine, where he prayed for peace and had a glimpse of the holy relic of the Prophet. "Islam is the religion of peace. Prophet Mohammad also preached peace. Let peace come to all of us." Quoting from the holy Koran, he stressed on the secular aspects of Islam. "What you do, you are responsible for it. What I do, I am responsible for it''. He hoped that peace would soon return to the State. The Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, had readily accepted his suggestion of converting the shrine into a full-fledged heritage centre. Dr. Kalam arrived at the shrine situated on the western shore of the famous Dal Lake in a motorboat amid tight security.
