Best Bakery case verdict should be appealed: CPI(M)

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 28. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today expressed "shock" that all the accused in the Best Bakery mass killings in Vadodara had been acquitted and demanded that legal steps be taken to go on appeal.

The party's politburo said that the killing of 14 persons in the Best Bakery was "one of the worst incidents in the communal pogroms in Gujarat last year.'' The conduct of the case by the prosecution and the State was a "graphic illustration of how justice is denied to the victims of all the vicious crimes committed in that period.''

The party said the trial was marked by "intimidation of witnesses, blatant negligence by police and shoddy prosecution by the State authorities.''

Expressing anguish, the CPI (ML) said the judgment was "yet another miscarriage of justice."

It was time for all secular and democratic forces in Gujarat and elsewhere to come forward to "thwart the ploy to whitewash the genocide in Gujarat.''
