Let the barriers go

Sir, — If I were Atal Behari Vajpayee, I would ask the Uttar Pradesh Government to remove all the barriers leading to the Ram temple at Ayodhya and withdraw all police protection from the spot... I feel assured that no Muslim would disturb the peace there. Nor any Hindu, for the simple reason that no one likes riots to break out.

Any place which needs no special protection can be taken as non-controversial. If there was a problem in the past, it no longer exists; it is evidently resolved. Such a solution would be achieved without any skin off any nose.

The path to the resolution of the Babri imbroglio chosen by Mr. Vajpayee and the Sankaracharya of Kanchi is not a pragmatic one.

Sir, — It is very disheartening to note that the VHP and religious leaders such as the Swamiji of Vishvesha Theertha of Udupi are trying to raise the bogey of Shaiva-Vaishnava difference and derail the efforts of the Kanchi Acharya to resolve the Ramjanmabhoomi dispute amicably.

The VHP and the Vaishnava seers should note one important point: that Lord Rama or his birth place is not a property of any one sect. All Hindus equally revere Rama.

Praveen S. Shetty,

Sir, — The VHP is asking the BJP to quit the National Democratic Alliance, if the BJP cannot pass the legislation on Ayodhya and the BJP has rejected the demand . The VHP and the BJP are defrauding the nation by running with the hare and hunting with the hound.

With an eye on the next Parliament elections, they have started this obnoxious hide and seek game. This cannot cut ice with the masses.

While the VHP with its ostrich like attitude sticks to its guns, the BJP leadership which has enjoyed the fruits of power is not prepared itself to part with it. These fanatical groups do not represent the Hindu community nor have they fought elections to prove their credentials.

H. Ghouse Baig,
Tiruchi, T.N.
