Legislation for farm workers sought

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI June 30. The All-India Central Council of Trade Unions and its affiliate, the Khet Mazdoor Sabha will jointly observe a nationwide `all India demand day' on July 2 to press for a central legislation for agricultural workers and fixing uniform minimum wage for all sections of unorganised sector and ensuring employment throughout the year for them. In a statement, the AICCTU criticised the National Democratic Alliance Government for its ``failure'' to enact a separate Central legislation for agricultural workers despite recommendations by several commissions, including the Second Labour Commission.

Citing serious lacunae in the Bill for the unorganised sector prepared by the Labour Ministry, it said it addressed none of the vital issues of the sector in spite of the fact that the economy is being transformed into that of an informal sector with a huge army of unorganised, casual labour, owing to the Government's liberalisation policies.
