Reconsider benefit-curbing orders: DMK

CHENNAI June 30. The DMK president, M.Karunanidhi, today said the Government should make some ``good announcements'' to avert the strike called by employees' unions.

Noting that the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, threatened to invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act against the employees if they went ahead with the strike plan, and that the unions had stated they would not be cowed down by the law, he said the best course of action for the Government was to reconsider all orders which curtailed benefits and come to a good decision.

It should stop parroting the theme of financial crunch, he said.

Mr.Karunanidhi felt that the unions' main demand now was only one — `call us for talks again'.
