Letters to the Editor
Sir, The article, `Settling the China border', by C. Raja Mohan( July 3 ) is thought-provoking. The main success of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's China visit is the acceptance of India's desire for a negotiated settlement. It is true that the mindset of both the countries has undergone tremendous changes from the 1950s. But Mr. Vajpayee faces the same problem which Jawaharlal Nehru faced lack of support from their party for reaching a compromising agreement in a real win-win situation. So let Mr. Vajpayee start bargaining with his own colleagues and the Opposition first and then with his counterpart in China, so that there may not be allegations of a "sell-out" in future.
C.P. Velayudhan Nair,
* * * Sir, There can be no doubt that given the political direction, the border dispute can be resolved within a reasonable time by the "give-and-take" attitude. As pointed out by Raja Mohan, the economic and political advantages of settling the northern border issue are immense. Irrespective of the differences, all political parties should join hands and give the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, a free hand to accomplish this task without delay.
N.G. Krishnan,
