Letters to the Editor
Sir, Any decision on sending troops to Iraq should be rational and based on the situation there. It is indisputable that India has strategic interest in the region. If peace is not immediately restored, there will be repercussions. There are about 3.5 million Indians working in the Gulf and the safety of their life, property and employment is the primary responsibility of India. Further over 50 per cent of oil flow is from the region and peace and tranquillity there is important to our country. Some time ago, Myanmar asked Indian assistance to develop its ports and communication system. But since it had a military junta at the top, for ideological reasons it was denied. Now China is a permanent fixture in that area and India is repenting.
