Letters to the Editor
Sir, About 80 people have lost their lives in train accidents during the past two weeks. If you look at the annual "railway killings", the figure will be alarming. It is apparent that there is something seriously wrong with the Railways. The employees seem to be losing control over the system and the authorities are callous about its functioning. The Railway Minister and his Ministry are only engaged in the inauguration of new stations and signalling systems. A paltry Rs. 32 crores is earmarked for rail safety. They tax the people in the name of rail safety and then nothing happens.
V.S. Kumar,
* * * Sir, Close on the heels of the Konkan Railway accident which claimed 51 lives, yet another tragedy on the tracks has shaken the country. The Golconda Express accident has taken the lives of 18 passengers. The regularity of rail accidents sends out an unmistakable signal that boarding our trains is perilous.
M.V. Ravindran,
