Pournima shoots best, but no medal, no quota

NEW DELHI JULY 3. Pournima Gawhane, shot better than everybody else in a field of 70 competitors, but she could not stretch to get a medal or an Olympic quota, as she was shooting for the MQS in the air rifle event of the shooting World Cup in Changwon, Korea, on Thursday.

Pournima shot a 398, with a series of 99, 100, 100 and 99, but could not compete in the final, as the Indian team was made of Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat, Suma Shirur and Deepali Deshpande, who had been consistent in international competitions.

Anjali had a 395, and finished joint 10th, Suma had a 394 for the joint 15th slot and Deepali Deshpande shot a 393 for the joint 21st position.

The gold and the Olympic quota place were bagged by Hiromi Misaki of Japan as she followed a 397 with a 103.8 in the final. She pipped Chengyi Wang of China by 0.7 points, while another Chinese Wen Yin took the bronze close behind at 499.6.

In the final, two shooters had scores of 397, while six others made the grade with scores of 396. Louise Minett of Britain also had a 396, but could not make the final on the count back, as she had shot a 96 in the last series after putting three 100s on the board.

Anjali, who had won the Olympic quota last year in Atlanta, had a series of 98, 99, 99, 99; Suma had 98, 100, 99 and 97 while Deepali shot 98, 100, 97 and 98.

Like Pournima, Sameer did not shoot below 99 in any of the cards, as he compiled a string of 100, 100, 99, 99, 99 and 99. Shimon Sharif shot a 581, with 95, 97, 95, 100, 99 and 95 as another MQS shooter.

In the team, Gagan Narang finished joint 15th with a 591, following a series of 97, 99, 98, 98, 100 and 99 while Sandeep Tarate was joint 37th with a 587, with rounds of 99, 99, 97, 96, 98 and 98.
