Workers in Management Bill likely in winter session

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 8. The Workers Participation in Management Bill, 1990 is likely to be tabled in Parliament in the winter session, the Union Labour Minister, Sahib Singh Verma told reporters during a seminar on "Workers Participation in Industry'' organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM) here today.

The assurance came after the CPI(M)-backed Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) general secretary said in the seminar that the union was ready to accept the bill in the interest of the workers.

Mr. Verma turned down the suggestion of the industrial houses for making worker participation in management voluntary. He said the experience of the Government regarding the self-regulation proposal had not been encouraging and hence it was necessary to have a legislation.

However, the Government had an open mind and industry and workers were free to give their suggestions for consideration before the final draft of the legislation was placed in Parliament. He said the bill had been pending since 1990 and adequate debate had already taken place on it.
