14 complete journalism course

BANGALORE JULY 8. Fourteen students today received their postgraduate diploma in print and web journalism at the first convocation of the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM), Bangalore. In his presidential address, Abraham M.George, Dean, IIJNM, said the Fourth Estate was a watchdog of democracy and good governance. The Press had been guiding and forcing the Government to implement policies and programmes effectively for the welfare of the people. He said of the 14 students who received diplomas in 2003, seven had got jobs. He advised the students to continue their hard work to reach new heights in their profession. Rajan Bala, Consulting Editor, The Asian Age, Bangalore, who delivered the convocation address, said good presentation and unbiased reporting were the hallmarks of great journalists. However, in the era of liberalisation, journalists were tempted by business leaders and political parties, he said. Mr. Bala also gave away prizes to students. Hemali Chhapia and Aman Khanna received prizes for excellence in news reporting, Debarshi Dasgupta bagged the prize for excellence in magazine writing, Amrita Mariam for excellence in new media, and Sreerekha Pillai for excellence in software application skills.
