Joining girls 400m runner Mandeep Kaur and triple jumper Alk Chikili on the sidelines were boys hammer thrower Kanagaraj Sathiswaran, 400m runner K. Appa Rao and 800m runner Vasisht Kumar Rai. Sathiswaran, a trainee of former National high jump record holder, Nalluswamy Annavi, narrowly missed qualification, reaching 59.68m on his third attempt after having opened with a 59.47m and then fouled his second throw. The poorest qualifying mark happened to be 60.19m. Appa Rao clocked 51.42s to come sixth in heat 3 of the 400m preliminary rounds. The top three in each heat plus six fastest losers qualified for the next round from six heats. Rai came sixth in his 800m heats in 1:57.90. The top two and 10 fastest losers in seven heats qualified for the next round. Indian hopes for crossing the first rounds now hinge on high jumper Hari Shankar Roy and girls 800m runner Pinky Parmanik. The results: Boys: Shot put: 1. Liu feng (Chn) 21.45m, 2. Kyle Helf (Can) 20.79, 3. Amin Al-Aradi (KSA) 19.69; Girls: 5000m walk: 1. Vera Sokolova (Rus) 22:50.23, 2. Ann Loughanane (Irl) 23:37.00, Noriko Nishide (Jpn) 23:50.69.
