SAI regional centre in Tamil Nadu

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM July 11. The Sports Authority of India has decided to establish one of its four proposed regional sub-centres at Rajakkamangalam near Nagercoil town in Tamil Nadu.

Stating this, SAI sources said on Friday, the proposed centre would cater to the training needs of sportspersons from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry.

The new centre will function under the control of the SAI Southern Centre in Bangalore and is being set up as part of SAI's initiative to create basic sports infrastructure across the country.

The other three regional sub-centres would be located in Uttar Pradesh (central zone), Jharkhand (east zone) and Maharashtra (west zone).

Of these, the work on the central zone sub-centre in Lucknow has begun and is expected to be completed next year. The preliminary paper work relating to the acquisition of the 80 acres of land required for the sub-centre at Rajakkamangalam has already been completed. The proposed site facing the Arabian Sea was identified by a SAI technical panel and once established, the sub-centre would become the only training centre in the country to have a facility for resistance sand running.

The sub-centre will be set up in three phases and would offer training facilities in athletics, basketball, football, hockey, kabaddi, swimming and volleyball to 100 trainees (boys and girls) at any given time.

The total financial commitment for the construction of the sub-centre would be Rs. 10 crores, the sources added. — Our Special Correspondent
