Two records set

NAGERCOIL JULY 12. Two new records were set in the women's section on the concluding day of the three-day 76th Tamil Nadu State senior athletic championships for men and women at the Anna Stadium here on Saturday.

V.S. Surekha of Velammal Prime Sports Association, Chennai set a record in pole vault by clearing a height of 3.40 metres, bettering her own record of 2.85 metres set in 2001. Incidentally she bettered the recent National Games record of 3.25 metres.

The other record was set by L. Suriya of Youth Sports Club, Pudukottai in 5000 metres. Her timing of 18:16.8s bettered the old record of 18:29s set by K. Jeyalakshmi.

Velammal Prime Sports Academy won the overall championship with a total of 196.5 points and Southern Railway finished second with a total of 174 points.

VPSA also won the team championships in both sections with a tally of 121.5 (women) and 75 (men) points.
