The Deputy Director of Public Instruction, V. Channaveerappa, told The Hindu that the relieving orders were issued on July 8 and served to the teachers in person on July 10. Of the 744 teachers appointed under rural weightage, 658 had been retained as they qualified for recruitment under the merit quota. He said 284 teachers (268 Kannada, five Urdu, and nine physical education) were appointed in 1997-98. Of them, 31 (26 Kannada and 5 Urdu) were relieved from service. In 1998-99, 360 (323 Kannada, 26 Urdu, 10 Hindi, and one physical education) were appointed; 53 (35 Kannada and 18 Urdu) had been removed from service. He said the students would be affected by the dismissal of teachers, as there was already a shortage of 450 teachers. However, those dismissed from service could get reappointed based on the roster system. The shortage would be filled through deputation, he added. Mr. Channaveerappa admitted that though it was planned to open 2,460 Akshara Dasoha centres in the district, the administration could open only 1,633 of them till Thursday. Food items had been sent to 2,456 centres, but many centres were yet to get gas connection and stoves. In a few places, the school development and managing committees had made arrangements for cooking food. Although he had not received complaints on the quality of meals served so far, the students of a school in Sakleshpur taluk complained of allergy on Friday. All of them were recovering in hospital.
