State BJP chief for changes in education system

By Our Special Correspondent

YANAGUNDI (GULBARGA DT.) July 12. The State BJP President, H.N.Ananth Kumar, today called for radical changes in the education system to inculcate nationalism and discipline, and train young minds to fearlessly protect their culture, religion, and the independence of the country.

Speaking after inaugurating the `Shaikshanika Sahamilana', a meet of teachers and students of the schools run by the Vidya Bharati in Gulbarga District, Mr. Kumar said that the syllabus in the textbooks was lopsided.

He said the curriculum did not contain the subjects of nationalism or the rich culture of the country, and therefore there was a need to bring in changes in the teaching methodologies. Mr. Kumar said that the education sector faced many challenges, and one of the major factors that concerned academics was whether the education should impart information or knowledge.

An education system that helped mankind to overcome hunger, illness, and ignorance was total education.

The present examination-based system was not suited for students to achieve this.

He said that teachers played a crucial role in moulding students and they (teachers) should be role models.

Lauding the efforts of Vidya Bharati to bring about a change in the present education system, Mr. Kumar said that the `Shaikshanika Sahamilana' organised every year gave an opportunity to teachers and students to interact and introspect on their activities in the past year.

Mr. Kumar said that though Rs. 14 crore people had completed high school education in the country, only 55 lakh of them had the opportunity to pursue higher education.

All efforts should be made to open up opportunities for those who were deprived of higher education, he said.

He said the country had a rich history of imparting quality education and there was an urgent need to bring back the knowledge-based education in the school curricula.

The President of the Kottala Basaveshwara Bharatiya Education Society and the former President of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Basavaraj Patil Sedam, presided over the function. P. Bhimareddy, General Secretary of Vidya Bharati, welcomed the gathering.

The retired District Health Officer, Shantaveer B.Sunkad, released a booklet, Gnana Ganga.

The Organising Secretary of Vidya Bharati, G.R.Jagadish, was present.
