Family violence a cause for concern: Judge

SHIMOGA July 12. The District and Sessions Judge, Ratnakala, has said that family violence, which has assumed a serious dimension, can be tackled by fostering mutual love and trust.

Inaugurating a seminar on "Family violence: Causes and remedies" organised by the Shimoga District Legal Services Authority, State Bank of Mysore, and the Kshema Trust here today, she said the rapid strides made in the economic field in the past ten years had left a deep impact on people's psyche. They were finding it difficult to keep pace with the changing times, as a result of which violence in the family was increasing.

Ms. Justice Ratnakala said family violence did not just involve atrocities against women but any crime committed within the home. She noted that as one violent incident led to another, it was advisable to sort out the differences within the family amicably.

Noting that it was important to trace the root cause of the violence before setting out to find a solution to it, she said the district unit of the Legal Services Authority, of which she was the Chairperson, was striving to create legal awareness among people, besides offering solutions to some legal problems in consultation with medical experts.

K.R. Sridhar, President of the trust and psychiatrist, said the 21st Century was marked by an increase in all forms of violence, which had affected society.

The Assistant General Manager of the regional office of State Bank of Mysore, A. Krishnan, who presided over the function, said family violence could be kept under check with the empowerment of women. To realise this, he said his bank was extending financial assistance to self-help groups in a big way to help them become financially independent.

The District and Sessions Judge, P.G.Nadagowda, and K.S. Krishna Bhat addressed the gathering.The Additional District Judge, K.N.Phaneendra, spoke about the activities of the Legal Services Authority.

Earlier, the Principal Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandrasekhar Patil, welcomed the gathering.

The Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate, D.R. Renuke, proposed a vote of thanks.
