Each district sanctioned 25 lakhs for checking contagious diseases

HYDERABAD July 13. The State Government today sanctioned Rs.25 lakhs for each district to be used for checking the spread of contagious diseases like the mystery viral fever, which has so far taken a heavy toll of children's lives.

This was among the five decisions taken at a meeting convened by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, where he discussed and reviewed the measures being taken by the Government to contain the fever.

The meeting decided to create awareness among people to use pyrethirum-impregnated gunny bags for tying to windows in a bid to prevent the entry of mosquitoes into houses. The use is to be popularised through demonstration on television. School students are to be enlightened about the fever for five minutes daily. Orders on this are to be issued by the Secretary, School Education.

According to a press release issued by the Chief Minister's office, the meeting resolved to take steps to stop rearing of pigs in villages. For achieving this, pigs are to be confined within five km from villages so as to prevent their straying into the open areas, with the help of the police. The Collectors have been addressed to take up schemes for the rehabilitation of pig-rearers.

By another decision, the meeting directed the Collectors to use fire fighters for spraying insecticide. The Principal Secretary, Panchayat Raj, is to take steps for provision of equipment to test the quality of drinking water. Officials of the Municipal Administration and Health department are to use only the standard anti-larval insecticides. The Director of Municipal Administration has been directed to order action against those who fail to use fogging machines in municipalities.

The Health Minister, K.Sivaprasada Rao, the Panchayat Raj Minister, N. Janardhan Reddy, the Minister for Municipal Administration, B.V.Mohan Reddy, the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, the Principal Secretary, Panchayat Raj, Samuel, the Principal Secretary, Health, Chaya Ratan, the Director, Municipal Administration, Srilakshmi, attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, Dr.Sivaprasada Rao conducted a video conference with nine Collectors and officials of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Medak, Khammam, Krishna, Prakasam and Nellore districts. Dr.Janardhan Reddy was present.

Dr.Rao asked the officials of various departments to coordinate their activities for controlling the mosquito menace by taking up fogging, spraying and sanitation drives. He instructed them to report to the district medical and health authorities if any child is referred to private hospitals with symptoms of viral encephalitis.

The Minister issued instructions to treat viral fever cases with utmost care, following the case management protocol. Water analysis should be done and disinfection taken up in all villages. Priority is to be given to those areas where viral encephalitis or gastroenteritis, acute diarrhoea have been reported. Repairs to pipelines and water sources, provision of alternate supply pending repairs, periodic cleaning and desilting of water tanks is also to be done.

He wanted wide publicity to be given on preventive measures through the electronic media, tom-tom, pamphlets. Inmates of the Social Welfare hostels should be screened immediately and those who complain of fever should be referred to hospitals.
