`Drip irrigation most ideal for horticultural crops'

By Our Staff Reporter

PEDAVEGI (WG DIST) JULY 14. A.K. Singh, Project Director, Water Technology Centre of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, on Monday said drip system was the most ideal for plantation and horticultural crops like oil palm. Speaking on "Irrigation needs of Oil Palm'', Dr Singh said drip irrigation would help farmers improve water use efficiency up to 30-50 per cent when compared to traditional flood irrigation or basin irrigation. The talk was a part of a workshop on "Micro irrigation systems suitable for oil palm cultivation'' organised by National Research Centre for Oil Palm. Frequent watering in the drip method would eliminate moisture stress and yield could be increased up to 40 per cent. Besides, the less atmospheric humidity, endowed with drip irrigation, would give little scope for pest and the frequent wetting would result in minimising weed menace,'' he said.
