Pinki's best is not enough

SHERBROOKE (Canada) July 14. Despite clocking another personal best, her second in as many days, Pinki Parmanik, could do no better than place seventh in her semifinal heat of the girls' 800 metres the third World Youth athletics championships here on Saturday. Six other Indians were eliminated earlier in the qualifying rounds.

The Indian girl timed 2:09.84 as against her previous personal best of 2:10.51 clocked in the first round heats here. Her semifinal heat was won by Russian Maria Chapaeva in a championship record time of 2:05.40. The Russian went on to better that mark while winning the gold on Sunday in 2:03.40.

For Asia, the notable success included that of Saudi Arabian 800m runner Mohamed Al-Salhi in a championship record of 1:48.79 on Saturday and that of Chinese girls javelin thrower Xue Juan with a meet record of 56.82m on Sunday.

China had a tally of three gold and one silver to occupy the fourth place in the medals tally behind the United States (6-4-4), Russia (4-5-3) and Kenya (3-4-2). Saudi Arabia had a haul of two gold, three silver and two bronze for the fifth place while Japan came at the 11th place with one gold, one silver and four bronze.
