Rupee surges to new peak

MUMBAI JULY 14. The Indian currency surged to a new 34-month closing peak of 46.04/05 a dollar on Monday, propelled by the persistent robust trade and capital inflows, but failed to pierce through the crucial 46-dollar barrier, following central bank intervention, through a large state-run bank. The rupee opened on strong note at 46.07/09 a dollar, sharply higher from last Friday's close of 46.10/11 and has appreciated by a steep six paise today. It had last posted a better close at 46.03/04 a dollar on October 3, 2000.
