Quake jolts eastern Taiwan

Taipei: Buildings in the eastern city of Hualien in Taiwan were shaken when an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale jolted the island, officials said on Monday. ``Buildings were swayed for half a minute,'' a police officer in Hualien said, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake struck at 1:18 p.m. local time from an epicentre 3.5 km east of Hsincheng town in Hualien county, according to the Seismology Centre. Taiwan is prone to earthquakes, lying near the junction of two tectonic plates. The worst quake to hit the island this century struck Nantou in central Taiwan on September 21, 1999, killing 2,400 people and leaving 100,000 homeless.
