Students of the Government Polytechnic, under the banner of Students' Federation of India (SFI), launched a tirade against the Government's decision to cancel the evening college system for diploma holders from the academic year 2003-04. Also, they blocked the road before the college protesting against the cancellation of free engineering seats. Addressing students, the SFI's district secretary, M.C. Reddeppa Reddy, termed `unfortunate' the cancellation of 1,400 seats in the part-time colleges in the State, meant to provide the employed a chance to pursue higher education, since they could not devote time in the morning. Also, fixing of Rs.22,000 as common fee for all engineering seats was nothing but `commercialisation' of education, he alleged. Students of the SV Arts College and SV Oriental college boycotted classes accusing the SVU of being indifferent to their woes. The students, led by activists of the All India Students Federation (AISF), took exception to the abnormal delay in commencing classes, though it was already three weeks since the academic year began. The district secretary, M.D. Prasad, attributed the delay to the non-filling of vacant lecturer posts. Meanwhile, the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) decided to hold a statewide junior colleges' bandh on Tuesday demanding waiver of tuition fee in view of the drought and action on the colleges running sans recognition.
