Adhikari triumphs

Mumbai July 15. West Bengal's Laxminarayan Adhikari won the National junior chess championship for the visually impaired at the Andheri Sports Complex here on Tuesday. A 12th standard student of the Amarendra Vidyapeeth, Kolkata, Adhikari finished the six-player tournament with 4.5 points to win the championship.

In his last round match, he drew with Maharashtra's Pramod Kakde. Adhikari will represent India in the World junior chess championship for the visually impaired to be held Spain from August 26.

Having finished second, Andhra Pradesh's P. Kalishekhar will also travel to Spain. Kalishekhar who had lost to Adhikari in his first round match, went on to win the remaining four matches against Rajasthan's Rajesh Bhavariya, Gujarat's Anand Kapure, Maharashtra's Parmod Kakde and finally Uttar Pradesh's Khalid Mohd in what was a crucial last round match for both players. Kalishekhar is a 10th standard student of B.B.S. Devnar School.

Adhikari and Kalishekhar will undergo a training programme on Wednesday and Thursday. They will be prepared for the World event by Dronacharya Award winner Raghunandan Gokhale.

The six players who took part in the National finals here qualified from the zonal championships held early this year.
