Move to check diversion of foodgrains

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI July 15. The Union Food Ministry today announced that movement of wheat for exports by road would be allowed only upto the end of this month in case of wheat stocks that are less than three years old and upto September 30 in respect of the stocks that were of 1999-2000 vintage and earlier crop years.

The move reportedly follows frequent complaints that many exporters were making a fast buck by diverting part of their consignments to the domestic market.

Wheat is provided at a subsidised rate for export purposes. Consequent to the new direction, wheat exporters would now be able to move their stocks only by train, which is considered fool-proof.
