LOS ANGELES: Eight people were killed and 35 injured when an elderly driver lost control of his car and ploughed into a crowded market in Los Angeles, fire officials said. The crash took place on Wednesday in a crowded farmers' produce market in the plush Santa Monica area of the city, which is packed with up to 9,000 people on each Wednesday. Fire Department officials said eight people were dead in the horrific crash, including a two-year-old boy, while another 14 were critically injured. The driver of the car, who is believed to be around 80 years old, apparently lost control of the sedan as he approached the teeming market, witnesses said. The four-door vehicle roared through the pedestrian area where the weekly market is located in a matter of seconds, bowling over people and vendors' booths, they said (in the picture, emergency officials assist pedestrians injured in the accident).
