By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 17. The Union Environment and Forests Minister, T.R. Baalu, today told the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, that the Centre was committed to conversion of forest villages into revenue villages as per the guidelines approved by the Union Cabinet.

The Government also intends to regularise the pre-1980 eligible encroachments on forest lands without compromising on the provisions of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, Mr. Baalu told the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister during a meeting here today. Mr. Baalu agreed to take necessary steps to modify the procedure for allowing the pre-1980 encroachments to be regularised and converted into revenue land without changing the legal status as forest land. Mr. Singh made a reference to the matching Compensatory Afforestation carried out in his State in conformity with the condition imposed at the Centre while approving regularisation of 1,68,000 hectares of encroached forest land and said 1,54,000 hectares of land had been covered under the Compensatory Afforestation.
