Menon calls on Riaz Khokar

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD JULY 17. India's High Commissioner-designate to Pakistan, Shivshankar Menon, today called on the Pakistan Foreign Secretary, Riaz Khokar, and had an informal exchange of views with him.

It was essentially a "courtesy call" by Mr. Menon. He would begin his formal innings only after presenting his credentials to the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf. Gen. Musharraf is now away on a three-nation African tour and Mr. Menon is likely to present his papers to him before the month-end.

Mr. Menon also called on the Chief Protocol Officer of the Pakistan Foreign Office to officially inform him about his arrival.

Malik arrest condemned

Meanwhile, Pakistan has strongly condemned the arrest of the senior APHC Leader, Yasin Malik. A spokesperson of the Pakistan Foreign Office alleged that the arrest of Mr. Malik in Jammu was yet "another manifestation of India's policy to brutally suppress the freedom movement" in Kashmir.
