15,000 policemen to be deployed for Pushkaram bandobust

HYDERABAD July 17. Over 15,180 police personnel are to be deployed for bandobust duty for the 12-day Godavari Pushkarams along the banks of the Godavari from July 30 to August 10. As many as 10,572 policemen are to be posted in East and West Godavari districts.

The Home Minister, T.Devender Goud, who gave details of a special action plan for the Pushkarams at a press conference here on Thursday, said elaborate police bandobust arrangements are to be made in view of the gathering of over three crore pilgrims from different parts of the country. If required police manpower would be sought from other States. A control room would be established at Hyderabad.

The police personnel would be involved in providing security at 164 ghats in the districts of East Godavari, West Godavari, Khammam, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Warangal and Karimnagar. Better communication system and CCTV facility are being provided at important bathing ghats to monitor crowds. Boats and trained police swimmers would be deployed at strategic places around the ghats to prevent any mishap.

VHF sets of 20 watts (250) and handheld (150) have already been set up at the Rajahmundry and Kovvur ghats. In all 292 officers of different ranks of communication wing have been deployed at Rajahmundry.

Mr. Goud said heavy vehicles passing through Rajahmundry and Kovvur would be diverted from Ravulapalem to avoid traffic inconvenience to road-users. The policemen would be given new 50 motorcycles/jeeps for traffic regulation at Rajahmundry, which would be the centre of pilgrim activity apart from Kovvur, Bhadrachalam, Kaleswaram and Basar. Three hundred cellphones are to be provided to officers for better communication with the control room being established at Rajahmundry.
