Litterateur Boyi Bheemanna, doyen of Carnatic music, Puranam Purushottama Sastry, eminent dancer, a master in female impersonation and the proud son of Kuchipudi, Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma, painter of national repute, Kondapalli Seshagiri Rao, and Burrakatha artiste, Vedurumudi Bhadrakali, have been selected for the award this year. Carrying a cash prize of Rs. 30,000, a gold plated memento, shawl and citation signed by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is the Chief Patron of the Andhra Pradesh State Cultural Council, the awards would be given away by the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, at a glittering function here on August 1. At a press conference here on Thursday, the Council Chairperson, C. Narayana Reddy, said that the Government had constituted a screening committee to select the awardees with himself, K. Punnaiah, G.V. Subrahmanyam, Vice Chancellor of Sri Potti Sriramulu Telugu University as members and A. Srikanth, Director, Culture, as the Convenor. ``We have been giving the awards for the past four years from the budget allocated to the Council. However, as the allocations were reduced this year, we approached the Government for a special allotment and it sanctioned a sum of Rs. 3 lakhs for the purpose,'' he explained.
