The doctor of the nursing home, M. Venkateswara Rao, told a battery of visiting reporters accompanied by the Lok Sabha member, B. Satyanarayana (Congress), on Friday that Suresh (3) of Gujjangivalasa in Gurla mandal and Pavani (10 months) of Seethanagaram had died on June 30 and July 13 respectively immediately after their admission to his hospital. He said he had treated two more cases with similar symptoms during the last one week. Dr. Venkateswara Rao said that a child with similar symptoms admitted in the headquarters hospital here was referred to K.G. Hospital, Visakhapatnam. But the child was brought to his nursing home for treatment. The disease could be cured if patients were admitted in hospitals at the initial stage, he said. Saying that deteriorating sanitary conditions during monsoon were reasons for the mystery disease, Dr. Venkateswara Rao said a number of patients suffering from diarrhoea were visiting his hospital. He said that the had treated 30 cases in three hours this morning and on an average he would be treating about 90 diarrhoea cases everyday. K.V. Ramana Murty of Vamsi Paediatric Hospital, another nursing home in Kotha Agraharam in the town, said that he had been treating at least 20 viral fever cases and about 50 diarrhoea cases everyday. He said ten patients were admitted to his hospital with symptoms of gastroenteritis. When asked, the Municipal Commissioner, A. Venkata Rao, said that the municipality had no funds to clear garbage and debris accumulated at several places, particularly behind Nehru Park in the heart of the town. The Commissioner said that the District Collector had released Rs. 4 lakhs for levelling garbage and cover it with soil at Dasannapeta, a residential colony in the town. The Congress floor leader in the Municipal Council, Pilla Vijayakumar, also accompanied the reporters.
