The issue will also be discussed at a meeting of the trade unions on July 24, eve of the Standing Committee meeting. Describing the dismissal of 3.5 lakh Government employees in three days as unprecedented, the AITUC general secretary, Gurudas Dasgupta, said the step had shaken the foundations of the trade union movement in the country. This had never been done in India or anywhere in the world, even during Hitler's regime in Germany, he said in a statement here today. Mr. Dasgupta said he suspected that this was being done to push through the Centre's economic policies. Under such conditions, it would be impossible to carry forward the trade union movement enshrined as a fundamental right in the Constitution, he added.
