Cabinet rank for NCM chief

New Delhi July 18. The National Commission for Minorities chairman, Tarlochan Singh, has been granted the status of Union Cabinet Minister.

The Commission's vice-chairman, M.S. Usmani, has been given the status of Minister of State, an official communiqué said today.

``The positions will be personal to Mr. Singh and Mr. Usmani for the duration of the term of their office,'' the communiqué said.

Meanwhile, the Commission today demanded an amendment to the National Comission for Minorities Act to provide it with an investigation wing to make it more effective in dealing with problems of minorities.

Citing the cases of the National Human Rights Commission and the Commission for SCs/STs where these investigation wings were already in place, a NCM delegation led by its chairman called on the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament and asked him to recommend to the Government to initiate the amendment to the Act.

The delegation also apprised Mr. Joshi of the NCM's concern over the fact that the annual reports of the Commission had not been placed before Parliament since 1995-96 as required under the Act.
