Manipulating words

Sir, — Adverting to the article, "Not our war" by V.R. Krishna Iyer ( July 14 ) wherein Donald Rumsfeld is quoted as having said, "The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." In a smart turn of phraseology reminiscent of Derrida's "deconstruction", Mr. Rumsfeld has once again reminded us of the incoherence of the written word in this age of "dumbing down" wherein a maverick politician can deconstruct a text to manipulate millions. Bush Senior and his infamous "Read my lips", and now Bush Junior and Company, it seems, are quite adept in the art of "deconstruction."
