India confirms Chinese transgression of LAC

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI July 24. India today confirmed that it was "aware" of the transgression of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by a Chinese patrol on June 26 in the Asaphila area of Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district.

"This matter has already been taken up through diplomatic channels and a response from the Chinese side is awaited," the foreign office spokesman stated. "This is an area where there are differences in the perception of the Line of Actual Control," the spokesman said in response to a question at his regular briefing.

"The Agreement of 1996 between India and China on Confidence-Building Measures in the Military Field along the LAC in the India-China Border Areas contains a specific provision for the manner in which situations involving face-to-face contact between personnel/patrols of the two sides are to be followed. In the case in question, these provisions do not appear to have been adhered to by the Chinese side," he said.

According to the spokesman, due to differences in the perception of the LAC, situations had arisen on the ground that could have been avoided if there was a common perception of the LAC.

"The process of clarification of the LAC is under way. The Government regularly takes up violations of the LAC with the Chinese side."
