David Davidar to become Penguin Canada publisher

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JULY 24. The chief executive officer and publisher of Penguin India, David Davidar, will take over as the publisher of Penguin Canada from January 1 next year, the Penguin Group announced here today.

One of the founding members of Penguin India, Mr. Davidar (44) has seen the company grow from its modest beginnings in 1985 to becoming continental Asia's largest English trade publishers, releasing 200 books a year.

Mr. Davidar, who will maintain a strong connection with Penguin India by continuing as a director of the business and editing a select list of authors even after taking over the new assignment, said he was looking forward to the role with Penguin Canada for gaining a new perspective on international publishing. ``I'm delighted that my involvement with Penguin India will continue through the Board appointment and regular visits back home''.

Mr. Davidar, who would be succeeded by Thomas Abraham as president of Penguin India, hoped that his experience in North America would stand him in good stead and help the Penguin Group further develop its publishing activities in key international markets.

For Mr. Abraham — currently general manager (marketing) of Penguin India — this would be another challenging assignment after his stints with Coca-Cola, Oxford University Press and Dorling Kindersley where he had worked before joining Penguin India in 2000.
