Star News gets a fortnight's extension

By Anita Joshua

NEW DELHI JULY 24 . After withholding its decision on Wednesday, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry today granted a fortnight's extension to Star News to uplink from India, even as officials indicated that a final decision on its application for permanent uplinking could take a month. Now into its fifth extension since the expiry of the 90-day grace period — which Star News had, to scale down its foreign equity to 26 per cent — this is the first time the channel has secured an extension longer than a week.

Explaining the rationale for giving a fortnight's extension this time round, officials said they had done so to give themselves some time to process the application and the voluminous submissions of Star News to the queries posed by the Ministry.
