Udupi seer hints at 'two new formulas'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE JULY 25. Viswesha Tirtha of the Pejawar Math in Udupi, a key figure in the Ramjanmabhoomi movement, today hinted at the crystallisation of "two new formulae" to resolve the Ayodhya dispute.

He said the formulae would be put before Muslim leaders for discussion, and only then would it be made public. He refused to elaborate. However, he said it contained proposals, which were not included in the previous efforts to resolve the issue.

The two plans had evolved following his consultation with the Sankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Jayendra Saraswati. Viswesha Tirtha said repudiated suggestions that the Kanchi Acharya had decided not to mediate on the temple issue again.

He said the issue of constructing a Ram temple was a matter of faith and could not be resolved through judicial means. Even the court was reluctant to pronounce any judgment, as it could not antagonise society at large, he claimed.

Therefore, only the people's verdict would prevail, he said. He urged the Government to take the initiative to bring the leaders of the two communities to the negotiating table and appealed to political parties to leave the Ayodhya dispute to the religious leaders to resolve. Asked about the VHP's claim that Kashi and Mathura were also on the agenda, Viswesha Tirtha said: "Let us not talk about the other shrines now and concentrate on efforts to resolve the Ayodhya tangle."
