Pak. prison hostage drama ends, three judges killed

ISLAMABAD JULY 25. Three of the 39 persons taken hostage by five prisoners in an attempted jailbreak today in the eastern Pakistani city of Sialkot were killed in a rescue operation that also left the five inmates dead, police said.

Three judges were killed by the prisoners as they tried to shoot their way out of the situation, police said.

Police officers shot and killed the five inmates, all jailed on kidnapping charges. They took 39 persons, including 16 judicial officials hostage, in an attempt to escape from the prison, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Malik Mohammad Iqbal, told AFP by telephone.

``All five inmates have been killed and the hostage drama is over,'' Mr. Iqbal said from Sialkot.

Mr. Iqbal said an unspecified number of hostages were also injured in the exchange of fire between the prisoners and police commandos.

One policeman was wounded in the gun-battle with the prisoners. The five had attacked the judicial officials while they were inspecting a section of the prison where women were kept and took them hostage in the women's barracks.
