Denver: Three American nuns who were arrested after protesting at a military facility in Colorado have been sentenced to jail, a news report said. The nuns, aged between 55 and 66, were on Friday given sentences ranging from 30 to 41 months. They could have been sentenced to up to 30 years in jail. The prosecution had sought a sentence of six years. The nuns were found guilty in April of painting crosses with their own blood on missile silos to protest against the war in Iraq. They were found guilty of interference with national defence and causing damage of $1,000. The nuns, who belong to a peace activist group, broke into the silos in Colorado last year. The nuns said they had received thousands of letters supporting their action. Peace activists have called for a demonstration on Saturday to protest the sentences. DPA
