Japan to send troops to Iraq

SINGAPORE July 26. Japan's House of Councillors today approved the Government's controversial move to send units of the Self-Defence Forces (SDF) to Iraq. The upper chamber of Diet in Tokyo adopted the bill in the early hours.

The bill, authorising the largest deployment of Japanese troops overseas since World War II but in a `non-combat role', was passed by the House of Representatives earlier this month.
