Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Sri Lanka of 1980s promised its people a golden future. The country had, under J. R. Jayewardane, charted for itself a route to outdo Singapore. At the regional tourist convention organised in Colombo, Jayewardane assured the gathering that he would make Sri Lanka the ultimate tourist destination. Industry was given a major thrust with free trade zones springing up near Katunayake and elsewhere. All goods produced in these zones were for export, which was booming. Agriculture was given equal importance with the World Bank coming forward with funds. Indian participation in Sri Lanka's industrial scene was encouraging with several ongoing joint ventures. And then came 1983. The holocaust destroyed the country's basic infrastructure and caused deep destruction. It will be very long before Sri Lanka gets back on its feet.
