Mushrooming varsities

Sir, — This is with reference to the article "Mushrooming universities" by Amrik Singh ( July 12 ). The writer has drawn attention to the increasing rate at which universities are mushrooming in different parts of the country. What is more lamentable is that setting up universities through gazette notifications is not consistent with the existing practice. It is not warranted for State Governments to set up universities without consulting the Centre and the University Grants Commission.
