According to an official spokesman here today, a tempo carrying them was crossing the rivulet when it was swept away in the flash flood. Two bodies had been recovered in the downstream while 11 were still missing but the authorities have little hope of their survival considering the high current in the rivulet. Even as the flood situation in the arid region of Kutch district marginally improved, the authorities have established contacts with some 10,000 people in 23 villages in three taluks, including the worst-hit Banni taluk, still marooned in swirling flood waters following heavy rainfall in the last few days. At least nine persons were killed in heavy rains and floods in different parts of the State during the last 24 hours. While three persons were killed in Navsari in south Gujarat last night, two each were killed in Sabarkantha in north Gujarat and Rajkot district in the Saurashtra region, and one each died in Umbergaon in Surat district and Sagbara in Broach district, both in south Gujarat. The Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, along with some Ministers and officials made an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas of Kutch district last evening and sought help of the Air Force officers to drop fodder from helicopters along with food packets. Accordingly, the officials dropped six tonnes of grass by helicopters over the Banni areas besides air-dropping some 8,000 food packets. At least 2,000 people have been shifted to relief camps.
