Maximum number of vacancies in IT, Computer Science,

CHENNAI JULY 29. At the end of the month-long counselling for admission to engineering colleges today, almost half the number of seats found no takers, with the maximum number of vacancies being in Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology.

Of the total 47,431 seats available in 43 streams, only 26,246 have found takers, leaving a huge vacancy of 21,185 seats.

"The vacant seats would have to be filled up by managements of the respective colleges," P.Narayanasamy, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions, said. On the last day of the counselling today, over 300 seats had been filled. According to an allotment list despatched by the Anna University, only 3,847 seats, out of a total 10,516, had been filled in Computer Science and Engineering, leaving 6,669 seats vacant. In the Information Technology stream, 6,212 out of 8,338 seats were vacant. Other courses with more vacancies than allotments are Chemical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control, and Polymer Technology. In the more popular streams, 6,779 seats had been allotted in the Electronics and Communication Engineering branch, out of a total 9,350, while 4,245 seats out of 6,902 had been filled in Electrical and Electronics.

Online counselling, which began early this month, was held simultaneously in Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai and Coimbatore.
